Picture-taking has been a lifelong experience for Kazumi Sakurai. To photograph her throughout her infancy, Sakurai's father purchased a Nikon SF camera when she was born, which she still uses today for her own images. After winning several awards and photography contests in Japan, Sakurai began her full-time career as a photographer at the age of 21.
Shooting in both digital and film formats, Sakurai's photographs are at times soft and dreamy, and at other times stark and introspective. Her intimate style and skillful use of light fosters a deep connection between the viewer and the image, revealing a personal aesthetic that is as reflective of the photographer as it is of the subject.
After living in New York for 17 years, she is currently living in Kauai, Hawaii.
